Quick Answer: Why Your Pavers Moved and What to Do First

Pavers shift after cleaning because high pressure stripped the joint sand out of the joints. That sand is structural. It transfers load between pavers and creates interlock. Once it is gone, each paver moves alone. Diagnose whether you lost only joint sand or also bedding sand before you re-sand anything.

Three things to do right now. Stop washing it. Keep vehicles, heavy furniture and foot traffic off the loose section. And do not buy a bag of sand until you have run the three tests further down this page, because half the people who re-sand a shifting patio are treating the wrong layer.

Joint Sand Is Structural, Not Cosmetic

Most homeowners think of joint sand as filler. Something to keep weeds down and make the patio look finished.

It is actually the thing holding your patio together.

How Interlock Works

A paver field is not a slab. It is a few hundred separate units sitting on a bed of sand over a compacted aggregate base. Nothing is glued. Nothing is fastened.

What makes it behave like one surface is interlock, and interlock comes from compacted sand jammed tight in every joint.

When you step on a paver, that load does not just go straight down. The sand in the joints transfers part of it sideways into the pavers on either side, and those pass it along again. The whole field shares the load — this is the same shear-transfer mechanism the paver industry’s own construction standards rely on to spread vehicle and foot traffic across the entire field rather than one unit at a time.

Empty the joints and that stops. Now every paver carries its own load alone, on its own little patch of bedding sand. It tips, it rocks, and the edges start to migrate.

That is why the movement often shows up three weeks after the cleaning rather than the same day. It takes a little traffic and a couple of rains for the field to figure out that it is no longer connected.

The Water Intrusion Mechanism

Here is the part that turns a cosmetic problem into an expensive one.

A full joint sheds water. An empty joint is a funnel.

Rain runs straight down the open joint to the bedding sand layer, and from there into the aggregate base. Moving water carries the fine particles out of that base with it.

Those fines are what lock the base together. Remove enough of them and you get voids. Voids collapse under load, and now the paver above is not just loose, it is sitting lower than its neighbors.

That is the difference between a Saturday with a bag of sand and a real repair. And it happens over one or two seasons, not overnight, which is why catching it early matters here.

How the Damage Happened: The Wrong Tip

A Newington homeowner rented a machine on a Saturday in May to clean the front walkway. Tumbled concrete pavers, mid 2000s install, the usual grey and tan blend.

He started with the green tip, which is the 25 degree fan, and after ten minutes decided it was not doing anything. So he swapped to the red one.

The walkway came out bright. Genuinely bright. He sent a photo to his wife.

Three weeks and two thunderstorms later, the third paver up from the step rocked under his heel. The border course along the lawn edge had crept out maybe half an inch and was no longer a straight line.

He called us thinking the pavers had failed. The pavers were fine. Every joint in that walkway was empty down about an inch and a half.

A zero degree tip, and to a lesser extent a 15, does not spread the machine’s energy across a surface. It concentrates all of it into a pencil width line. Point that into a sand filled joint and the sand comes out like it was vacuumed. It also etches the paver face and blasts the color off a tumbled unit.

Nobody sells a pressure washer with a warning label about joint sand. The tip that came in the box is not the tip for this job, and that is not the homeowner’s fault. Diagnose First: Joint Sand Only, or Bedding and Base?

Before you spend a dollar, find out which layer failed. These three tests take about ten minutes.

Test 1: The Rock Test

Walk the field heel to toe on every paver that looks suspect. Rock your weight from one edge of the unit to the other.

If the paver moves or clicks but sits level with its neighbors when you stand still, you have lost joint sand and nothing more. That is the good outcome.

If it moves and sits lower than the pavers around it, keep going.

Test 2: The Depth Probe

Take a long flat head screwdriver and push it straight down into an open joint. Do this in several places, especially in the low spots.

Roughly an inch to an inch and a half of open joint is normal after an aggressive wash. Annoying, but it is only joint sand.

If the screwdriver drops freely past the thickness of the paver and keeps going, the bedding sand under the unit is gone. You are now looking at a base problem.

Test 3: Edge Creep and Elevation

Run a string line tight across the field in a couple of directions, or lay a straight board across it.

A visible dip or dish in the middle means the base has settled. Water pooling in that spot after a rain confirms it.

Then look at your borders. If the outside course has spread outward and the joints near the edge are wider than the joints in the middle, that is edge restraint failure, and re-sanding will not hold until the restraint is fixed.

The Fix: Re-Sanding Paver Joints Correctly

If your diagnosis says joint sand only, this is a job you can do. Here is the sequence that actually holds.

Step 1: Dry the Joints Completely

Everything downstream depends on this.

Sand poured into a damp joint clumps and bridges. It forms an arch partway down, leaves a void underneath, and collapses the first time it rains hard. You will think you did it wrong. You did it wet.

In Connecticut humidity, give it two to three genuinely dry days after the cleaning. Longer if the patio is north facing or under canopy, because those areas hold moisture far longer than the sunny half of the same patio.

Check by pushing the screwdriver in and looking at what comes out on the tip.

Step 2: Choose Your Sand

There are two real options and neither is automatically correct.

Polymeric is the right call for most patios and walkways with good drainage and a sound base. Regular sand is a better fit if the field still moves seasonally, if drainage is poor, or if it is late in the season and you need a holdover until spring.

Step 3: Sweep In Lifts, Do Not Dump

This is the step everybody skips.

Pour sand across the field and sweep it in until the joints are roughly half full. Not to the top. Half.

Then compact, then come back and fill the rest.

One dump and sweep leaves that same bridged void described earlier. It looks finished on the surface and it is hollow underneath.

Step 4: Compact With a Plate Compactor and Roller Pad

The single most common DIY omission, and the reason a re-sand fails within a season.

Rent a plate compactor. Fit it with a roller pad or a protective mat, which is a urethane or rubber sheet that goes between the plate and the pavers. Without it you will chip and scuff the faces, especially on tumbled units.

Run two passes in perpendicular directions. The vibration is what drives the sand down and locks it.

Then refill the joints and do it again. You will be surprised how much more sand the joints take on the second round. That is the void you would otherwise have left in there.

Step 5: Top Off and Blow the Surface Completely Clean

Fill the joints to the manufacturer’s recommended level, usually just below the chamfer on the paver edge.

Then take a leaf blower on its lowest setting, hold it at a shallow angle, and clear every trace of dust off the paver faces. Walk the whole field. Then walk it again.

If you are using polymeric sand, this step is not optional and it is not cosmetic. Read the next section and you will see why.

Step 6: Activate Polymeric Sand Correctly

Skip this step entirely if you used regular sand.

Polymeric sand needs water to trigger the binder, and how you apply that water decides whether the job works.

Use a shower setting on the hose nozzle, never a jet. Work in short passes across a section. Let the water absorb between passes. The goal is saturation without movement.

Stop the moment you see any runoff carrying sand. That is the sand leaving the joint, and once it starts you cannot fix it by adding more water.

Then leave it alone. Most products want at least 24 hours before foot traffic, longer for vehicles, and a dry forecast for that window — the same dry-and-cure conditions dealer installation guidance for polymeric sand specifies to avoid washout and haze. Check the label, because cure requirements vary.

The Two Classic Polymeric Sand Failures

If you have already tried polymeric and it went wrong, it was almost certainly one of these two.

Haze on the Paver Face

A dull white or grey film across the pavers that will not wash off.

What happened is simple. Polymer dust was left sitting on the paver faces when the water went on. That dust got wet, the binder activated, and it cured onto the surface exactly as it was designed to do. It just cured in the wrong place.

Prevention is entirely in step five. Blow the surface obsessively clean before a drop of water touches it.

Removing cured haze is a different matter. On smooth faced pavers a haze remover product will usually get most of it. On tumbled or textured pavers, where the polymer has cured into every dimple in the surface, we will tell you honestly that it may not fully clear. Sometimes the best available result is significant improvement rather than a clean face.

That is worth knowing before you buy the bag, not after.

Washout After the First Rain

You did the whole job and a week later the joints are half empty again.

Four usual causes.

Watered too hard. A jet nozzle blows the sand out before it can set.

Watered too fast. No absorption time between passes, so the top crusts over and the sand underneath never gets wet or bonded.

Never compacted in lifts. The bridged void collapsed and took the sand with it.

Rain arrived inside the cure window. A thunderstorm four hours after installation will undo a full day of work.

There is a fifth cause specific to our climate. A polymeric joint that was installed correctly can still crack and lift over a hard winter, because the field moves with frost and the joint is rigid. Expect to top off small sections in spring. That is maintenance, not failure.

Edge Restraint Failure: Why the Border Keeps Spreading

If your outside course keeps drifting, sand is not your problem.

Popped Spikes and Lifted Restraint

Edge restraint is the plastic or aluminum L shaped strip around the perimeter of the field, spiked into the base. It is what the whole patio pushes against.

Frost jacks those spikes. Water in the soil freezes, expands, and lifts them a fraction of an inch — the same upward heave of the subgrade caused by freezing soil moisture that highway engineers design pavement bases around. Do that a hundred plus times over a Connecticut winter and the spikes walk up out of the base.

Once the restraint lifts, the field has nothing to push against and it starts to spread outward under normal use.

Re-sanding a spreading field is throwing sand at a moving target. Fix the restraint first, then re-sand.

Plow Damage on Driveway Aprons

If your pavers are at a driveway apron or along a plowed edge, check this every March.

A plow blade catches the lip of the apron, tears the restraint out, and drags the first course of pavers with it. Damage often looks minor from the house and turns out to be a full course out of alignment when you get close.

Spring thaw, roughly mid March to mid April here, is when all of this becomes visible. That is the right time to walk your hardscape and your concrete and driveway cleaning surfaces and note what winter did.

When Lift and Reset Is the Honest Answer

Sometimes sand will not fix it. Here is when.

A dish or depression deeper than roughly three quarters of an inch across the field.

Water standing in that spot after a normal rain instead of draining off.

The screwdriver probe dropping past paver thickness, meaning bedding sand is gone.

Multiple courses spreading, not just the border.

The same failure returning two seasons in a row after a proper repair.

The sequence for a real reset looks like this. Pull the affected units and set them aside in order. Inspect and excavate down to the aggregate base. Re-compact it, adding process aggregate if there is a void. Screed a fresh, even bed of bedding sand to a consistent depth. Reset the pavers. Compact. Then re-sand the joints.

Note what is not in that list: shimming a low paver with extra bedding sand and dropping it back in. That is the classic shortcut and it fails within a season, because the void underneath is still there.

The Connecticut Timing Problem

Everything above is standard hardscape practice. This part is what changes in our climate, and it is where most out of region advice falls apart.

Freeze Thaw and Glacial Till

Central Connecticut runs somewhere in the range of 100 to 140 freeze thaw cycles in a normal season on horizontal surfaces. Every one of those is a small expansion and contraction event in your base, your joints and your soil.

Then there is what is under all of it. Much of Hartford County sits on glacial till with a heavy silt and clay fraction, and the compact, fine-grained lodgement till common here is documented as slowly permeable and prone to supporting perched water tables rather than draining freely. That soil holds water rather than draining it, and saturated soil heaves when it freezes.

This is why paver failures here tend to show up as sinking and dishing rather than washout. It is also why a patio that was perfect in November can be visibly uneven in March.

Walk your patio during the spring thaw, roughly mid March into April. Whatever winter did to it will be at its most obvious then, before the grass grows in and the furniture goes back out.

The same holds for paver pool surrounds, which are common in Rocky Hill, Cromwell and Glastonbury. Check those in spring too, before the pool opens, because pool deck cleaning and re-sanding are much easier before the furniture and the cover come off.

The Right Window for Polymeric Sand in Connecticut

Manufacturer labels and national blogs often cite 32 degrees as the minimum. In practice that is far too low to be useful here.

What you actually need is:

Joints genuinely dry all the way down.

Air and surface temperature above roughly 50 degrees and rising, not falling.

A dry forecast for at least 24 hours after installation, preferably longer.

Enough daylight warmth left in the day for the cure to get going.

That puts the honest window in central Connecticut at roughly late April to early October.

Late fall installs are the single biggest reason polymeric sand fails around here. The nights are cold, the dew is heavy, the joints never fully dry, and the binder never properly sets. Then the first freeze arrives and takes it apart.

Roman’s rule: “If you call me in November about polymeric sand, I will tell you to wait until spring.”

If you are stuck with open joints going into winter, regular joint sand as a holdover is a perfectly reasonable answer. It keeps water and debris out of the joints, it will move a bit, and you redo it properly in May.

Prevention: Cleaning Pavers Without Blowing the Joints Out

You will need to clean this patio again. Here is how to do it without repeating the whole exercise.

Chemistry First, Pressure Second

This is the mindset shift that fixes everything else.

The dirt on your pavers is organic growth, tannin from leaves, and general grime. Those come off with a proper cleaner and dwell time, not with force.

Apply the cleaner, let it work for the label’s dwell, agitate where needed, then rinse. Pressure is for rinsing. It is not the cleaning mechanism.

That principle is the entire basis of soft washing, and it is why our results on pavers do not come with a re-sanding bill attached.

Tip, Pressure and Standoff

If you are washing them yourself:

Use a 40 degree white tip. A 25 degree green tip at most.

Keep pressure at the surface in the range of 1,300 to 1,800 PSI. That is plenty for pavers.

Hold 8 to 12 inches of standoff and keep moving.

Never aim into a joint. Work across the field, not along the joint lines.

On a new installation, wait at least two weeks before any washing.

Use a Surface Cleaner, Not a Wand

A rotary surface cleaner spins its jets under a shroud at a fixed height. Even energy, even coverage, no single point taking concentrated impact.

It is faster than a wand, it does not leave zebra striping, and it does dramatically less damage to joints. If you own a machine and you have any amount of hardscape, a surface cleaner attachment is the best accessory you can buy.

A Wethersfield Patio That Came Back

It had been cleaned the previous fall by a crew that blasted it clean and never re-sanded. The joints went into winter open.

By the March thaw there was a visible dish near the corner where the downspout splashed. Water was standing there after every rain.

We ran the tests. Rock test showed several units moving. The screwdriver dropped past paver thickness in a rough two foot circle around the low spot, and nowhere else. So bedding sand was gone locally, but the rest of the field was only missing joint sand.

That gave us an honest answer with two parts. A small lift and reset in that two foot zone, which we referred to an installer, plus extending the downspout so the splash stopped feeding the same spot. Then a full clean and polymeric re-sand of the entire field in June, once temperatures were reliably above 50 and the joints had dried out.

Not the cheapest answer and not the most expensive one. It was the one the probe pointed at.

The following spring the field was flat and the joints were tight. The homeowner now has us back on a schedule rather than waiting for something to go wrong — the kind of outcome you’ll see echoed across our customer reviews.
