A ranch in Wethersfield with a 1980s driveway. Wide, diffuse grey brown shadow, roughly six feet across, in the spot beside the garage where a small tractor had lived for years. It had wept hydraulic fluid slowly the entire time.
Nobody had spilled anything. That is what made it hard. Years of a slow weep puts oil deeper and wider than a single dumped quart ever does.
We ran it properly. Hot water pre wet, alkaline degreaser at full dwell with the slab misted twice so it never dried, broom agitation, then a surface cleaner pass at moderate pressure. The shadow lightened noticeably in one visit, maybe a third of the way.
Then two poultice cycles on separate visits. The first pulled well. The second pulled less. The third would not have been worth the homeowner’s money and we said so.
Final honest result: substantial lightening, not disappearance. You could still find it if you knew where to look.
What actually satisfied him was the last step. We cleaned the entire driveway to a uniform tone. Once the surrounding concrete came back to an even color, the remaining ghost stopped reading as a stain and started reading as normal variation in an old slab. He stopped noticing it within a week.

Why the Popular DIY Fixes Fail
Every one of these is on the first page of a search. Here is what each one actually does.
Cat Litter. Absorbs surface liquid, which is genuinely useful in the first hour of a fresh spill. It has no ability to reach oil that is already inside the pore network. Once the stain is dry, litter is doing nothing but sitting on top of it while you sweep it back and forth.
Dish Soap. It is a mild surfactant designed for nonporous dishes with hot running water and a sponge on the other side. It has almost no alkalinity, it breaks down under dwell, and it has no mechanism for reaching oil five millimeters into concrete. It also foams badly, which makes rinsing harder.
Bleach. Sodium hypochlorite oxidizes organic growth and lightens pigment. That is why it works so well on algae and mildew. Oil is a hydrocarbon. Bleach does essentially nothing to it. Worse, it often makes the stain look darker by contrast, because it brightens the algae and general grime around the stain while leaving the stain untouched. People read that as the stain getting worse.
Baking Soda and Cola. Baking soda is a mild abrasive with very little cleaning chemistry behind it. Cola is weakly acidic and mostly sugar. Together they scuff the top layer, which lightens things for a week or two. Then the shadow wicks back to the surface and you are exactly where you started, minus a little paste.
Not All Oil Is the Same

Timing This Right in Connecticut

Use a rotary surface cleaner rather than a wand. A surface cleaner holds a fixed standoff, spins the jets so no single point takes prolonged impact, and covers evenly. That is how you get a clean slab instead of a clean stripe.
Rinse toward a drainage point and keep the emulsified oil moving. If it puddles and dries, it settles back in.
This whole sequence is the core of our pressure washing and driveway cleaning process, and none of it is a secret. The variables are heat, chemistry, dwell and coverage, not machine size.
The Poultice Method for Old, Deep Stains
For anything that has been there for years, the standard method will lighten it and then plateau. A poultice is how you get past the plateau.
The idea reverses the mechanism that got you here. Instead of pushing a cleaner down into the slab, you pull the oil back up.
You mix an absorbent powder with a solvent or degreaser into a paste roughly the consistency of pancake batter. Diatomaceous earth, fuller’s earth, powdered clay and even plain flour all work as carriers.
Spread it over the stain about a quarter to a half inch thick, extending an inch or two past the visible edge, because the stain is wider underground than it looks.
Cover it with plastic sheeting and tape the edges down. That slows evaporation and keeps the solvent in contact.
After 12 to 24 hours, pull the plastic and let the poultice dry out completely. This is the important part: as the carrier evaporates, capillary action runs in reverse and draws the dissolved oil up out of the pores and into the powder.
Scrape it up, dispose of it properly, rinse the area, and look at the result.
On a decades old stain, expect to do this two or three times. Each cycle pulls less than the one before. When two consecutive cycles look the same, you have reached the ceiling for that slab.
Field Story: The Wethersfield Ranch and the Tractor Shadow
A ranch in Wethersfield with a 1980s driveway. Wide, diffuse grey brown shadow, roughly six feet across, in the spot beside the garage where a small tractor had lived for years. It had wept hydraulic fluid slowly the entire time.
Nobody had spilled anything. That is what made it hard. Years of a slow weep puts oil deeper and wider than a single dumped quart ever does.
We ran it properly. Hot water pre wet, alkaline degreaser at full dwell with the slab misted twice so it never dried, broom agitation, then a surface cleaner pass at moderate pressure. The shadow lightened noticeably in one visit, maybe a third of the way.
Then two poultice cycles on separate visits. The first pulled well. The second pulled less. The third would not have been worth the homeowner’s money and we said so.
Final honest result: substantial lightening, not disappearance. You could still find it if you knew where to look.
What actually satisfied him was the last step. We cleaned the entire driveway to a uniform tone. Once the surrounding concrete came back to an even color, the remaining ghost stopped reading as a stain and started reading as normal variation in an old slab. He stopped noticing it within a week.

Why the Popular DIY Fixes Fail
Every one of these is on the first page of a search. Here is what each one actually does.
Cat Litter. Absorbs surface liquid, which is genuinely useful in the first hour of a fresh spill. It has no ability to reach oil that is already inside the pore network. Once the stain is dry, litter is doing nothing but sitting on top of it while you sweep it back and forth.
Dish Soap. It is a mild surfactant designed for nonporous dishes with hot running water and a sponge on the other side. It has almost no alkalinity, it breaks down under dwell, and it has no mechanism for reaching oil five millimeters into concrete. It also foams badly, which makes rinsing harder.
Bleach. Sodium hypochlorite oxidizes organic growth and lightens pigment. That is why it works so well on algae and mildew. Oil is a hydrocarbon. Bleach does essentially nothing to it. Worse, it often makes the stain look darker by contrast, because it brightens the algae and general grime around the stain while leaving the stain untouched. People read that as the stain getting worse.
Baking Soda and Cola. Baking soda is a mild abrasive with very little cleaning chemistry behind it. Cola is weakly acidic and mostly sugar. Together they scuff the top layer, which lightens things for a week or two. Then the shadow wicks back to the surface and you are exactly where you started, minus a little paste.
Not All Oil Is the Same
The fluid matters, and this almost never gets addressed.

That last row catches people out constantly. Black smears near the end of a driveway in the weeks after a neighbor sealed theirs are not oil. Treating them like oil spreads them.
One aside worth knowing. Oil on pavers is a different repair path than oil on a poured slab, because you can lift and replace individual units and because joint sand complicates the chemistry. If that is what you are dealing with, deck and patio cleaning and re-sanding is the right place to start, and the same principle applies to a pool deck if that is where the stain sits.
Equipment and Technique, So You Do Not Etch the Slab
If you own a washer and you are going to do this yourself, this section is the one to reread.
Hot Water Versus Cold
Heat is the cheapest performance gain in this entire process. Hot water thins the oil, speeds the chemical reaction, and rinses better.
Consumer machines are cold water only. That is not a reason to give up, it just means your chemistry and your dwell have to carry more of the load. Compensate by being more patient, not by turning up the pressure.
Surface Cleaner Versus Wand
The wand is the striping machine. It concentrates all your flow through one jet, so wherever you hold it a moment longer, you take more material off.
A rotary surface cleaner spins its jets under a shroud at a fixed height. Even standoff, even dwell, even result. If you are cleaning a whole driveway and you own a washer, an inexpensive surface cleaner attachment is the best money you will spend, a point driveway maintenance guides echo as well.
PSI and Tip Guidance
Broadly speaking, 2,500 to 3,500 PSI at the surface is the working range for residential concrete, with a 25 degree tip held 8 to 12 inches back and kept moving continuously, in line with the equipment ranges most professional concrete cleaners recommend.
A zero degree tip has no legitimate use on a residential driveway. Neither does holding a 15 degree tip six inches off the slab and pausing.
The rule to remember: wetter, hotter and slower beats harder. Every time somebody tells us they cranked the pressure, we already know what we are going to find when we get there.
This is the same principle behind all of our house washing and driveway work. Matching the pressure to the surface is the job. Anyone can turn a machine up.
The Honest Conversation About What Is Achievable
A ten year old stain in thirty year old porous Newington concrete may only lighten 70 to 90 percent. That is true whether you do it, we do it, or the most expensive company in Hartford County does it.
Anyone promising you 100 percent on an old stain either has not seen it yet or is not being straight with you.
So the real question is what you do with the remaining 10 to 30 percent. There are two honest answers.
Option A: Clean the Whole Slab So the Shadow Blends
This is usually the right call, and it is the one homeowners are most surprised by.
The reason a stain bothers you is contrast. It is dark against concrete that you have stopped noticing but which is actually grey, streaked with algae, and stained with tannin from leaves.
Bring the entire slab back to a uniform tone and the remaining ghost drops from “that stain” to “an older section.” Same physical mark, completely different perception.
It is also why an oil call so often turns into a full driveway clean. Once one area is genuinely clean, the rest looks worse than the homeowner remembered. It is the same logic behind our soft washing work on other surfaces around the house: an even, consistent clean reads completely differently than a spot fix.
Option B: Solid Stain or a Coating
If you want the mark gone, gone, then you are covering it rather than removing it.
One condition, and it is not negotiable. The slab has to be fully degreased first. Nothing bonds to oil. A coating applied over a residual stain will lose adhesion right over the stain and peel in a patch shaped exactly like the thing you were hiding.
So a coating is not a shortcut around the cleaning. It is a step that happens after it.
Timing This Right in Connecticut
Season matters more than most people expect, and getting it wrong leads to a false conclusion.
Alkaline degreasers slow down badly as temperatures drop. Below roughly 45 degrees, emulsification stalls, dwell becomes unpredictable, and rinsing suffers because cold water is doing none of the work that warm water would.
The practical window in central Connecticut is April through early November.
Try this in February and you will get a poor result, and you will very reasonably conclude the stain is permanent. It probably is not. You just attempted it in conditions where the chemistry cannot work.
There is a second reason to wait for spring. Winter leaves chloride residue across the whole slab from road brine. Once a few good rains have flushed it and temperatures are consistently above the mid forties, degreaser wets out the way it is supposed to.

When to Call Us
Not every oil stain needs a contractor. Plenty of homeowners handle a cured stain on a decent slab with a good degreaser and patience, and we would rather you did that than pay us for something you can do.
Call somebody when: you have tried twice and hit a wall, the stain is more than a year old and diffuse at the edges, you created a halo and now the fix is a whole slab problem, not a spot problem, you have hydraulic fluid or transmission fluid rather than motor oil, the driveway has to look right for a listing, an appraisal, or an event with a date on it, or you do not own hot water and the stain needs it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why will my oil stain not come off with a pressure washer? Because pressure only works the top millimeter of concrete, and an old oil stain sits three to eight millimeters down inside the capillary pores. Water has high surface tension and does not follow oil into those pores. You need an alkaline degreaser to emulsify it first.
Can a pressure washer make an oil stain worse? Yes. High pressure drives surface oil deeper into the pore network and erodes the cement paste around the stain, leaving a lighter, rougher etched ring. That halo is permanent surface damage and often ends up more visible than the original stain.
What is the best degreaser for oil on concrete? An alkaline degreaser formulated for concrete, not a general purpose household cleaner. High pH breaks the oil down through saponification and holds up under long dwell. Apply it to a dry slab, agitate with a stiff broom, and never let it dry on the surface.
How long should degreaser sit on a driveway stain? Usually 10 to 20 minutes, following the product label. The critical rule is that it must stay wet the entire time. If it dries, it stops working and redeposits what it lifted. Mist it as needed, especially on a warm sunny day.
Does hot water remove oil better than cold water? Considerably better. Heat thins the oil so it can move, speeds up the chemical reaction with the degreaser, and improves rinsing. It is the biggest single difference between a professional result and a rental machine result on an oil stain.
Will bleach remove an oil stain from concrete? No. Bleach oxidizes organic growth and lightens pigment, but oil is a hydrocarbon and bleach does essentially nothing to it. It often makes things look worse by brightening the algae and grime around the stain while the stain itself stays dark.
Does cat litter actually work on oil stains? Only on fresh liquid. Applied dry and worked into a spill within the first hour or two, it absorbs a useful amount. Once the oil has soaked in and dried, litter cannot reach it and is doing nothing but sitting on the surface.
Can a ten year old oil stain be removed completely? Realistically no.
