Stripes after pressure washing are not leftover dirt, they are etching. The wand cut through the smooth cement paste on the surface and exposed the sand below, so the marks cannot be washed away. Light banding weathers out, medium etching needs the whole slab cleaned evenly, and deep etching needs resurfacing.
Roman puts it in one sentence when he walks up a striped driveway: the stripe is not dirt you missed, it is concrete that is gone.
Good news first. This is almost always cosmetic, not structural. Your driveway is not failing. It just looks like a barcode from the street, and that is a fixable kind of problem.
Why Your Driveway Has Stripes
The Top Layer of Concrete Is Not the Same as the Concrete
When a slab is finished, the troweling and floating action brings the finest material to the top. Cement and fine sand, water, very little stone. That thin skin is called cement paste, and a thin weak version of it is called laitance — a weak, friable layer of fine cement particles that forms wherever bleed water carries them to the surface during placement and finishing.
That skin is the only part of your driveway that looks uniform. It is also the softest part, and it is usually just a couple of millimeters thick.
Under it sits the actual concrete: coarse sand and stone in a matrix. Cut through the skin and you are looking at a different material with a different color and a different texture.
That is your stripe.
A Wand Cuts, It Does Not Clean
Four variables decide whether your washer cleans a slab or carves it. PSI, GPM, nozzle degree, and how far you hold the tip off the surface.
A 3,000 PSI machine with a 15 degree tip held six inches away concentrates enormous energy into a narrow line. That removes paste.
The same machine with a 40 degree tip held eighteen inches back spreads the same energy across a wide fan. That cleans.
People blame the machine. It is almost never the machine. It is the tip and the distance.
Dwell Time Is the Variable Nobody Thinks About
Here is the part that explains the actual pattern you are seeing.
Watch someone wand a driveway. They sweep the wand in an arc. The wand moves fastest in the middle of the sweep and slows down at both ends, where the wrist changes direction.
Slow means more dwell. More dwell means more material removed.
That is why striped driveways so often have bands that are wider and lighter at the ends of each pass. It is not a coincidence. It is a picture of somebody’s wrist.
Why a Surface Cleaner Exists
A rotary surface cleaner is a round housing with a bar inside that spins, carrying two nozzles.
Two things about that design solve the striping problem completely.
Fixed height. The housing rides on the slab, so the nozzles are always exactly the same distance from the concrete. No wrist variation.
Constant rotation. The bar spins fast enough that no single point on the surface takes a concentrated hit. Every square inch gets the same short exposure.
Remove distance variation and dwell variation and you have removed both causes of striping. That is the entire reason the tool exists.
Worth knowing: for flat work, GPM matters more than PSI. Flow is what carries dirt away, and two machines with the same pressure rating clean a slab at very different speeds depending on how much water volume they can put down. A high pressure, low flow machine is a poor driveway machine, which is exactly what most consumer units are.
One honest caveat. A surface cleaner is not idiot proof. An operator who does not overlap passes leaves faint arc lines at the edge of each circle. The fix is disciplined overlap, roughly a third of the housing width, and consistent walking speed. This is a big part of what separates a professional pressure washing in Hartford CT result from a rented one.

Severity Triage: Which of the Three Do You Have?
Before you do anything, run this test.
Wet the entire slab evenly with a hose. Not a section. All of it. Then look at it soaked.
Water hides surface dirt and color variation. What it cannot hide is a difference in surface profile. So if the marks vanish when the whole slab is uniformly wet, you are mostly looking at cleaning contrast. If they still read clearly through the water, material is gone.
Then feel it with a bare palm.
Tier 1: Light Cosmetic Banding
Faint lighter bands. The surface still feels smooth everywhere, cleaned and uncleaned alike.
This is uneven cleaning, not cutting. You removed grime in strips.
Fix: clean the whole slab evenly at low pressure with a surface cleaner and a pre-treatment. Or do nothing and let one or two Connecticut seasons close the gap.
DIY? Yes, if you can rent or borrow a surface cleaner.
Tier 2: Medium Etching
Visible bands with a slightly rough, sandy feel. Run your hand across and you can tell where the wand went with your eyes closed. Sand grains are showing but stone is still buried.
Fix: bring the entire slab down to the same profile by cleaning every square foot uniformly, then seal it. The goal is not to restore the paste. The goal is one consistent texture instead of a pattern.
DIY? Possible, but risky. Matching an etched profile by hand usually means adding new stripes while chasing old ones.
Tier 3: Deep Etching and Exposed Aggregate
Pitted, fuzzy or gravelly. You can see stone. Sometimes you can feel a small lip with a fingernail at the edge of a pass.
Fix: this is a resurfacing conversation, not a cleaning one. No amount of washing helps, and more pressure actively makes it worse.

Field Story: A Newington Cape Driveway in April
The weekend the weather finally broke, a homeowner on a mid century cape in Newington rented a 3,000 PSI machine and went after the winter grime with the wand and the yellow tip.
He stopped partway through because he could see his own passes showing up as light bands, and he was not sure whether that meant it was working or not working.
When our crew got there, the pattern was easy to read. Bands running the width of the drive, each one wider and lighter at both ends where he had slowed to turn his wrist. Inside the bands the concrete felt like fine sandpaper. The untouched sections between them were still glassy.
Held at a low angle in afternoon light, you could see individual sand grains in the stripes.
Tier 2. Paste cut through, aggregate not yet exposed.
We pre-treated the whole slab, let the chemistry do the lifting, then brought it down uniformly with a surface cleaner, edge to edge and joint to joint. Then we sealed it.
Here is the honest outcome. It did not look like new concrete, and we told him it would not before we started. What it looked like was one slab with one consistent texture, instead of a barcode. From the street, the stripes were gone. Standing on it, you can feel that the whole surface is a little more open than it used to be.
That is the realistic win on Tier 2, and it is worth having.
The Repair Ladder for Etched Concrete
Options from cheapest to most involved.
Do nothing and let it weather. Right for Tier 1. Sun, rain, freeze thaw and tires will even out cleaning contrast over a season or two. Be clear on what weathering does and does not do: it blends color, it does not rebuild profile. Tier 2 and 3 will not weather away.
Uniform re-clean of the whole slab. The most underused fix on this list. Stripes are a contrast problem. Clean every square foot to the same standard and the contrast disappears, even though the etching is technically still there. This is the answer for most Tier 1 and many Tier 2 driveways, and it is the core of our concrete and driveway cleaning work.
Cement based resurfacer. A thin overlay, often around an eighth of an inch, bonded to a prepped slab. It genuinely works when it is done right.
Roman has a warning here worth repeating. He has seen thin overlays let go after a single Connecticut winter when the prep was rushed. Bond preparation is the entire job. In a hundred plus freeze thaw cycle climate, a poorly bonded overlay does not fade away quietly, it delaminates in sheets.
Micro-topping or decorative overlay. A thicker, finished look. More expensive, and it needs a concrete contractor who does this specifically.
Grinding or mechanical resurfacing. For a slab that is structurally sound but has lost its profile across the board. Also a specialty trade.
Solid concrete stain or coating. This hides profile variation by removing the color contrast that makes stripes visible. It works, but choose carefully. Anything film forming on a Connecticut driveway has to survive plow blades and chloride de-icer.
Replacement. Only when the slab was already cracked, scaled or heaved and the striping was the last straw. We do not sell driveways and we will not pretend you need one.
A note on the acid advice you have probably read. Several popular pages recommend a muriatic acid wash to even out pressure washer marks. We do not recommend that to homeowners. Acid etching the whole slab is itself a permanent surface change, hydrochloric acid is genuinely hazardous to handle in a residential setting, and introducing chloride to concrete in a road salt climate is the last thing that slab needs.
Not All Stripes Come From Pressure: Chemical Striping
Before you accept that you cut your driveway, check whether the marks are actually chemical. The fix is completely different, and much easier.
How to Tell Chemical From Mechanical
This is the single most useful tell on the page.
Pressure stripes follow the swing of a wand. They are straight, hard edged, roughly parallel, and they run in the direction somebody was working.
Chemical stripes follow gravity. They run downhill with the slope of the slab, they fan out where water spread, and their edges are soft and feathered rather than crisp.
Stand at the top of the driveway and look at the direction of the marks. If they point downhill, nobody etched your concrete.
Acid Burns
From a masonry cleaner or rust remover used without pre-wetting the slab, or without neutralizing afterward. Usually a lightened, slightly rough patch with a hard boundary where the liquid stopped.
Bleach and Sodium Hypochlorite Runs
Extremely common. Somebody soft washes the house, and the rinse water tracks across the driveway on its way to the lawn.
It shows up as clean vertical fingers below downspouts and along foundation lines. Because it removes organic growth, the affected areas are cleaner than the rest, not damaged.
Downstream Detergent Lines
Detergent that sat in one spot, dried, then got rinsed unevenly. Looks like permanent staining and is actually residue.
The Fix for All Three
Almost always a uniform re-clean and neutralize, not a repair. Chemical marks are on the surface, not cut into it.
A Wethersfield example. We were called out to a driveway the homeowner had been quoted resurfacing on. The marks were vertical clean fingers under every downspout, plus a fan shape at the low corner.
He had soft washed his own house the previous month and let the rinse run across the drive.
The giveaway took about ten seconds: the marks followed the slope of the driveway, not the swing of a wand. That job was a wash, not a repair, and he had almost spent several thousand dollars on the wrong problem.
When It Looks Like Damage but Is Not: Efflorescence
White or cloudy patches that seem to come and go with the weather.
That is efflorescence. Soluble mineral salts dissolve in water moving through the slab, migrate to the surface, and crystallize as the water evaporates. It is extremely common on Hartford County concrete in spring after a wet winter.
The test: efflorescence is a deposit sitting on the surface. It wipes, brushes or dissolves. Etching is missing material, so nothing you do makes it lift.
The warning: do not attack a white haze with more pressure. That is exactly how somebody turns a nothing problem into a Tier 2 problem in an afternoon. If it is efflorescence, it needs the right cleaner and patience, not force.
The Connecticut Factor: Why Hartford County Concrete Etches Easier
National blogs assume a healthy slab. Ours are not starting from there.
Freeze thaw has already softened the top layer. Central Connecticut delivers roughly 100 to 140 freeze thaw cycles a season on horizontal surfaces. Every one of those works on the paste layer first, progressively micro-fracturing the surface pore structure long before anything is visible.
A twenty year old driveway in Newington has a fundamentally weaker skin than the same mix would have in Georgia. It will etch at settings that would be perfectly safe further south. That is not a theory, it is the single most common surprise for homeowners who followed advice they found online.
De-icing salt makes it worse. Rock salt, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride brine come up the driveway on your tires all winter. Chloride drives surface scaling, and scaling shows up in March rather than January, so people associate it with spring rather than with winter.
Spring is when both problems get discovered together. Mid March to mid April, homeowners walk out and find last year’s stripes and this winter’s scaling at the same time. Then they blame the pressure washer for the salt damage, or the salt for the stripes.
They are different failures with different fixes, so it is worth telling them apart before you spend money.
Green concrete on new builds. Concrete under twelve months old is soft and etches easily. Under thirty days it should not be washed at all. That matters for newer construction in Rocky Hill, Cromwell and Glastonbury, where plenty of driveways are still curing.
Stamped, Decorative and Exposed Aggregate Surfaces
Not all concrete plays by the same rules.
Stamped concrete and color hardener. The color lives in the top few millimeters, sometimes less. Once a wand cuts through it, the color is gone, and no cleaning brings it back. Repair means re-coloring and re-sealing, which is a decorative concrete specialty. Treat stamped surfaces as low pressure only, always.
Already exposed aggregate. Different failure mode. The stone is supposed to show, so what you are protecting is the matrix around it. Over-wash it and you loosen stones, which then pop out. Once they are out, they do not go back.
Pool deck broom finish and Kool Deck style coatings. Very soft and very easy to stripe, and the damage is right where bare feet go. These need the gentlest approach of anything on a property, which is why pool deck cleaning is chemistry led rather than pressure led.
Pavers. Not concrete slab, and a different problem entirely. High pressure blows the joint sand out and the field loses interlock, which is covered under paver cleaning and re-sanding.

How to Prevent Striping Next Time
Seven rules. Follow them and this does not happen again.
Use a 40 degree white tip, or 25 degree at most. Never a 0 degree red tip on a slab, for any reason, ever.
Keep the standoff distance consistent. Pick a height, roughly 12 to 18 inches, and hold it. Do not dip in for stubborn spots.
Never pause at the end of a stroke. That is where wand marks are born. Keep the wand moving through the turn and let the overlap handle it.
Use a surface cleaner for anything flat. The single biggest upgrade available to a DIY homeowner, and cheaper than most people assume.
Pre-treat and let chemistry work. A proper cleaner with real dwell time removes the organic growth and grime. Pressure is for rinsing what the chemistry already released. That principle is the whole basis of soft washing, and it applies to flat work just as much as to siding.
Test patch somewhere nobody sees. Behind the garage, the side strip of the walk, under where the car parks.
Clean the whole slab, never a spot. Spot cleaning is how you turn a small stain into a permanent clean rectangle.
And respect the age rule. Under twelve months, treat it as green and go gentle. Under thirty days, leave it alone.
When to Call a Pro in Newington and Greater Hartford
Reasonable to handle yourself: Tier 1 banding, if you can get a surface cleaner and cover the whole slab evenly.
Worth handing off:
Tier 3 damage, where cleaning is not the answer at all.
Stamped, decorative or exposed aggregate surfaces.
A slab already scaled from road salt, which will etch further under normal settings.
Anything where you have already tried twice and it looks worse each time.
